This piece is deeply special to me. In 2022, I spent one afternoon spontaneously printing a top and pants set with large floral symmetrical patterning. The set was one of my favorite pieces ever created and I named it the Angel Numbers set immediately, feeling it held a special sign for me and the trajectory and calling of my work.
Later that day I came to learn that my grandother had passed while I created this offering. My grandmother loved bold flowers in bright and deep colors, and always wore black. Growing up, my grandmother had a very difficult childhood with tragedy and neglect. She transmuted this pain into breaking a generational pattern between mother and daughter by raising her own daughter with love to the best of her ability.
As her granddaughter, I spent time with her every summer and always came home with huge bags of new clothing for the school year. Shopping for clothing with my grandmother was a ritual of ours, frequenting the old department stores and modeling the clothing for my grandfather when we got home. In the naivety of my youth, I came to see this pastime of my grandmother as frivolous or shallow in her focus on appearance as a marker of self-worth.
In the days after my grandmother passed, I received the truth of the deep, ancestral and transformative love my grandmother gifted me through clothing - as love. I realized with humility and awe that this gift was so powerfully etched upon me, I unknowingly stepped into the very same role with my work creating clothing through Sister Nettle. I have found myself creating beautiful clothing, and offering it up to other women so that they might use it to transmute something in themselves and find their own ancestral threads of purpose and meaning.
The Angel Numbers set marks this moment in time for me, when five years into my work I realized its true nature and origin. This set honors my grandmother for her grace, style, endurance, and love. May it bring something beloved forth in each of you as well.
